These phones actually take 5 double A's not 2 D batteries. The batteries are only in use when the button on the underside of the phone is depressed which is used for talking. Without batteries no messages can be sent, but you can still receive them over the phone. There is a crank on the front which operates the magneto, this is used to "ring" the phone at the other end of the line and that is all. I've heard of the batteries in these things lasting 1.5 years with regular in door use. These are FF63M phones manufactured by the company VEB Funkwerk Kolleda from 1963-1990. I bought one and my own I believe was manufactured in 1979. Mine arrived in pretty good shape with some slight battery acid damage in the battery compartment, I cleaned that up and I think it's going to work just fine. I keep mine in doors and set them up to where I can talk between houses.
