When it really cold, I layer a medium wool insert and a large inside the mitten. If my hands starts to get sweaty, I remove the outer shell and let my hands breath through the wool mittens. There is also a feature I didn't notice at first. There is a loop on the back of the shell that you can push the fore-finger into when you don't need the finger and it becomes a full 4 finger mitten and thumb.
